New magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pump systems are the only nonmagnetic intravenous (IV) pumps designed specifically for use in the MRI setting.

Safety in the MR is the primary concern when it comes to meeting needs for required patient care. These risks are well known: equipment can fly into the MR, cause artifacts on the images of the scan, or just shut down during crucial deliveries of medications and monitoring.

Novation (Irving, TX, USA), the largest healthcare supply contracting company in the United States, has awarded IRadimed Corp. (Wintern Park, FL, USA), a three-year single source contract for its MRidium MRI infusion pump systems. Effective September 1, 2012, the agreement makes the MRidium systems available to all 65,000 VHA (Irving, TX, USA), United Healthcare (UHC; Minnetonka, MN, USA), and Provista (Irving, TX, USA) members served by Novation. MRidium was awarded the contract under Novation’s MR- compatible IV pump category. This new agreement offers a broad base of new customers for IRadimed to partner with and grow its current strong base of MRidium MRI infusion pumps in the US market.

“It is critical to have products which have been designed with the utmost care and thorough insight of this harsh and potentially dangerous environment,” said Roger Susi, president and founder of IRadimed.

The MRidium 3860 MRI infusion system also incorporates Masimo’s (Irvine, CA, USA) SET SpO2 system for continuous monitoring of patients from the intensive care unit (ICU), neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), neurology, and other areas of the hospital right into the MRI suite. The 3860 system also offers an expanded drug library with DERS (dose error reduction system), which helps prevent medication entry errors while programming infusions, and provides the patient safety features that are quickly becoming the standard in infusion therapy in general patient care areas.

The MRidium system also supports infusion delivery in the MR through additional accessories associated with the MRI infusion pump. The system offers a modular second channel, which when attached to the 3860 pump, allows for delivery of two medications simultaneously during patient scans. An optional fully featured wireless remote control monitor is also available that has true plug and play capabilities, requiring no installation. A full range of available infusion sets are also available to provide the clinical flexibility needed in the demanding MRI environment.

IRadimed is a developer of MRI-safe products and infusion therapy. The company’s founder is the pioneering developer of both the world’s first and best selling MRI compatible monitoring system and the only nonmagnetic IV pumps designed specifically for use in the MRI environment.
