Whole-Body Molecular PET/MR System Receives CE Marking

By MedImaging International staff writers
Posted on 21 Jun 2011
An imaging system comprises a 3-Tesla magnetic resonance (MR) scanner and an integrated positron emission tomography (PET) detection system designed to perform as one.

While MR provides morphologic and functional details in human tissue, PET goes further to examine the human body at the level of cellular activity and metabolism. With its simultaneous data acquisition, the innovative system is expected to prove to be particularly valuable in the identification of neurologic, oncologic, and cardiac conditions of disease and in supporting therapy planning.

Siemens Healthcare (Erlangen, Germany) announced European Community (CE) marking for its Biograph mMR system. The CE marking states that the product is assessed before being placed on the market, and meets EU safety, clinical benefit, and environmental requirements. Customers can begin using the new system in Europe for clinical routine application. Biograph mMR is the world's only fully integrated whole-body molecular MR with simultaneous MR and PET data acquisition technology.

The Biograph mMR also opens new opportunities for research, such as the development of new biomarkers or new therapeutic approaches. Siemens has already installed a number of Biograph mMR systems at customer sites for clinical research, including university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Munich Technical University (Germany), the University Hospital of the Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen (Germany), and Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, USA).

This product is not commercially available in all countries.
