A proton therapy system provides clinicians with alternatives to minimize dose to healthy tissue in the course of delivering proton therapy treatments for cancer. The system’s scanning beam technology enables intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) by modulating dose levels on a targeted basis throughout the treatment area.

Varian Medical Systems (Palo Alto, VA, USA) has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its updated ProBeam proton therapy system.

Irradiations from multiple angles in the technology are combined in an optimum way to enhance control of dose distributions. Moreover, scanning beam technology eliminates the time-consuming need to manually insert separate shaping accessories for each beam angle to match the beam to the shape of the tumor.

Varian’s scanning beam IMPT technology has been installed in the Rinecker Proton Therapy Center (Munich, Germany), which has now treated over 1,500 patients. Varian also has contracts to install ProBeam systems at six sites: four in the United States, one in Saudi Arabia, and one in Russia.

Varian Medical Systems is a manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiotherapy, radiosurgery, and brachytherapy. The company supplies informatics software for managing cancer clinics, radiotherapy centers, and medical oncology practices.
