In a move that the company says should enable faster development of new products, Varian Medical Systems, Inc. More...
(Palo Alto, CA, USA) has acquired Argus Software, Inc. (Redwood City, CA, USA). Terms were not disclosed. Argus is a supplier of software for the management of quality control and test data for radiation oncology and diagnostic imaging equipment. Argus will become part of Varian's Oncology Systems business in Palo Alto. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Argus had revenues of around US$2 million in 2001.

The products of Argus are used in more than 500 centers for testing linear accelerators and related equipment, including treatment simulators, computed tomography (CT) simulators, and high-dose rate brachytherapy systems. The company also supplies software for CT scanners, radiographic and fluoroscopic checks, and for testing mammography units and film processors. Varian expects that Argus will aid in the development of a software module capable of automating Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) quality assurance testing.

"This will enable our company to add powerful tools to our fully integrated system of hardware and software for radiation oncology and create new offerings from Varian for diagnostic imaging,” said Tim Guertin, president of Varian Oncology Systems.
