im3D-Medical Imaging Lab (Torino, Italy), a research center that collaborates closely with medical and clinical specialists worldwide to develop medical imaging systems, has been selected as the Entrepreneurial Company of the Year 2007 by Frost & Sullivan (Palo Alto, CA, USA), a global growth consulting company.

The award recognizes im3D's innovative product range, strategic partnerships, and technology competencies, as well as the company's contribution in the European computer-aided detection (CAD) market. Im3D's first commercial product, the CAD-COLON diagnostic system, supports medical specialists in the early diagnosis and prevention of colorectal tumors by increasing diagnostic accuracy and reducing overall reading times.

"The use of CAD in virtual colonoscopy is gaining wide approval as a convenient and very accurate screening tool for colorectal cancer because the CAD algorithms automatically process the raw VC [virtual colonoscopy] images thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the radiologist,” explained Frost & Sullivan research manager Siddharth Saha. "im3D was selected as Frost & Sullivan's 2007 Entrepreneurial Company of the Year based on its advanced medical imaging technology and strong sense of research.”

"im3D-Medical Imaging Lab has with its superlative product offering, strategic partnerships, and technological competence, made its presence felt strongly in the European CAD markets,” emphasized Mr. Saha. "With clear strategies and strong distribution partnerships, the company is poised to carve out a significant market share in the CAD markets for virtual colonoscopy with its CAD-COLON product offering.”

CAD-COLON is one of the first CAD systems to be commercially introduced for virtual colonoscopy, which gives the company a significant competitive advantage. The potential market for the product is vast, given the high incidence of colorectal cancer worldwide and the increased use of virtual colonoscopy as a screening tool to detect polyps very early in their development.

"The software is provided in im3D's custom-built workstation to provide sufficient computing power to harness the full potential of the complex software algorithms of the CAD system,” added Mr. Saha. "This enables im3D-Medical Imaging Lab to sell their CAD-COLON solution independently without the need for partnering with CT [computed tomography] workstation vendors.”
