Elekta and MI in Distribution Alliance

Elekta (Stockholm, Sweden) has announced a global distribution agreement with Medical Intelligence (MI, Schwabmünchen, Germany), a single-source supplier of high-precision patient fixation systems, whereby Elekta will incorporate major features of MI's radiotherapy and patient positioning systems into Elekta's own product range, which includes information and clinical systems for cancer treatment and management of brain disorders.

The agreement reinforces Elekta's position as a comprehensive provider of total systems for stereotactic distribution, and the agreement includes plans for future product developments that should considerably advance the capability of clinicians to precisely and easily target tumor cells.

MI's product range includes the HexaPOD RTC, an image-guided robotic patient positioning system that allows for submillimeter patient positioning with 6o of freedom (6D). This means that the system can correct rotational errors in patient positioning as well as translational errors, making it suitable for the very high accuracy required for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT).

HexaPOD will be available for use with all Elekta digital linear accelerator systems, but by integrating the HexaPOD with Elekta Synergy S for image-guided SRS and SRT, synergistic benefits will be created, enabling clinical staff to accurately and reliably position patients for treatment with a previously unattainable level of assurance. Synergy S includes x-ray volume imaging, providing three-dimensional imaging of the tumor and its surrounding soft tissue at the time of treatment.

Summarizing the benefits of the partnership, Dr. Michael Vogele, CEO of MI stated, "The strategic alliance with Elekta made so much sense for both companies; while MI enhances Elekta's stereotactic portfolio, MI gains the strength needed to export radiation therapy solutions to a broader worldwide customer base. In the end, however, it is the clinical specialists and patients themselves who will realize the greatest benefits from this partnership.”
