The acquisition of a medical imaging software company, HInnovation, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI, USA), has been completed by Vital Images, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA).

HInnovation's software allows doctors to use notebook computers or PCs to access 2D, 3D, and 4D medical images securely over the Internet. Called iConnection, the software is a visualization and analysis solution for doctors and radiologists, providing applications and functions usually available only on a 3D workstation or by using proprietary hardware. With the iConnection, users can review and analyze patients' diagnostic images and can consult over the Internet whenever and wherever the need arises.

Vital Images is a provider of 3D imaging software for use in disease screening applications, clinical diagnosis, and therapy planning. The company's technology utilizes high-speed volume visualization and analysis as well as network communications based on DICOM and Internet protocols. The company announced its agreement to acquire HInnovation in January 2004. The transaction includes a U.S.$12 million initial payment and $6 million in contingent milestone payments.

"Our Vitrea software competes very effectively in the high-performance segment of the market,” said Jay D. Miller, president and CEO of Vital Images. "Many customers place an equally high priority on broader accessibility, and the HInnovation acquisition moves us toward offering Web-enabled solutions.”
