Image Enhancement Software Designed for Digital Mammography Workstation

Image enhancement-software tools have been developed for digital mammography workstations to improve the visualization of breast imaging.

Advanced Image Enhancement (AIE; Providence, RI, USA), a provider of image-enhancement tools for the medical imaging industry, reported that its cutting-edge image enhancement technology for digital mammography in breast cancer screening and diagnosis was introduced at the Radiological Society of North America's (RSNA) annual meeting. The AIE technology was demonstrated on Hologic's (Bedford, MA, USA) SecurView workstations during the RSNA meeting, which was held in Chicago, IL, USA, November 29 through December 4, 2009.

AIE's proprietary image enhancement software utilizes signal-processing technology originally developed from Navy research meant to locate undersea mines. In an expanded application, this technology enables physicians to extract more information from medical images. In a prior clinical study, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA, USA), Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston, MA, USA), Newton-Wellesley Hospital (MA, USA), and Faulkner Hospital (Boston, MA, USA) concluded that the AIE enhancement software provided a significant advantage for improving clarity of abnormalities, particularly in dense breast tissue, and it increased radiologists' confidence in determining their case management conclusions.

"The AIE technology takes a novel approach to processing of digital mammography images and has been seamlessly integrated into the workflow tools of Hologic's SecurView diagnostic workstation. This innovative technology will provide a significant improvement in the visualization of subtle features,” said Dave Mislan, Workstation product manager for Hologic.

"We are excited to now have our software in the hands of expert physicians for the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Michael Duarte, CEO and founder of AIE. "As a complement to Hologic's SecurView workstations, our software will provide radiologists with the ability to enhance suspicious regions of interest in mammograms with more image quality and detail than ever before. This is particularly important in cases where dense breast tissue is involved, because they present the greatest challenges.”
