A low-cost liver disease awareness and screening day has been held by a medical imaging company in the United Kingdom as part of the British Liver Trust’s "Love Your Liver" campaign.

The awareness and screening day included information sessions for employees and participation in advanced ultrasound liver screening. The British Liver Trust has shown that 20% of the UK is at risk of liver disease from alcohol consumption, obesity, viral hepatitis, and other factors.

The screening program took place at Siemens plc Healthcare division (Frimley, Camberley, UK) and included screening for liver fibrosis, and damage to the liver tissue. The equipment used was the Siemens ACUSON S2000 ultrasound system, the Virtual TouchTM imaging application, and Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) technology.

Andrew Langford, CEO of the British Liver Trust, said, “As employers become increasingly responsible for promoting good health, we encourage them to make staff aware that screening tests are available. The ultrasound technique used at the Siemens screening event was unobtrusive and swift. The postprocessing software is of great benefit to patients and clinicians as it delivers rapid results and gives clinicians the opportunity to see the entire liver, whereas a traditional liver biopsy only shows a certain segment of the liver.”
