Cleansing System Facilitates Colonoscopy Bowel Preparation

A new device enables the safe and rapid cleansing of a poorly prepared colon during the colonoscopy procedure, while preserving established procedural workflow and techniques.

The Motus GI (Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA) Pure-Vu GEN2 colon cleansing system is designed to generate a pulsed vortex mixture of water and air that can safely remove debris from the colon mucosa while simultaneously evacuating bowel contents, clearing the way for endoscopists to perform a quality examination, even when the patient does not want to, or is not capable of, completing a successful colon prep on their own. Pure-Vu integrates easily with most standard and slim endoscopes, and fits easily into the clinical workflow.

The system includes a control unit with sensing technology that prevents clogging during evacuation, a foot pedal for activation, and the disposable Pure-Vu Sleeve, with multiple irrigation jets spaced on the rim perimeter to efficiently clean the mucosal surface and two evacuation ports to increase removal of colon content. A low friction hydrophilic coating aids smooth advancement of the sleeve into the colon. In clinical studies, the system significantly increased the number of patients with an adequate cleansing level, based on the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale Score, a validated assessment instrument.

Challenges with bowel preparation for inpatient colonoscopy represent a significant area of unmet need that directly affects clinical outcomes and increases the cost of care in a market segment that comprises approximately 1.5 million annual procedures in the United States, and approximately four million annual procedures worldwide.
