The first and only existing ceiling-mounted Computed Tomography (CT) scanner intended for use inside the operating room has received approval for sales and marketing in Canada.

The scanner was developed for the neurosurgery and spinal surgery markets and can be used to support neurovascular procedures, and complex brain tumor resection. The scanner can be moved in and out of the operating room during surgery on ceiling-mounted rails freeing up space in the operating room.

The IMRIS (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) VISIUS iCT scanner uses the 64-slice Siemens Healthcare (Erlangen, Germany) SOMATOM Definition AS scanner core, and includes 3-D volume rendering for surgical planning and dose reduction, personalized dose management, and diagnostic quality imaging.

Jay D. Miller, IMRIS president and CEO, said, "This completes our roll-out of VISIUS iCT for North America and another step in our overall global distribution. As procedures become more minimally invasive, the need for better visualization with advanced imaging increases. VISIUS iCT places the highest quality CT imaging inside the OR. This scanner delivers more flexibility for both bone and soft tissue scanning compared to other intraoperative CT scanners in the sector. Both neurosurgeons and spine surgeons will find this unique solution helpful in supporting the full spectrum of intracranial, spinal and neurovascular procedures.
