A medical imaging company, and leading orthopedic and sports medicine specialists are working together to develop a 3-D Cone Beam CT (CBCT) Computed Tomography imaging system.

The system, which is intended for orthopedic surgeons, will be able to capture weight-bearing images of the extremities, i.e., knees, legs, feet, arms, and hands. Initially the development effort will focus on CBCT technology, and the diagnosis, and treatment of knee injuries.

The technology is being developed by Carestream (Rochester, NY, USA) and could be adopted for athletic training facilities, urgent care facilities, clinics, and specialty practices such as orthopedics. One focus of the new technology will be for sports medicine.

Diana L. Nole, president of Digital Medical Solutions at Carestream, said, “We are focused on applying CBCT technology for extremity imaging because it offers excellent visualization of soft tissue and bone with systems that are smaller and more affordable than CT systems. This system could make it easier to obtain diagnostic exams immediately following an injury and help improve evaluation and treatment. Carestream is working with top orthopedic care providers and leading sports medicine experts to help guide current and future product development initiatives.”
