Automated CT Radiation Dose-Tracking Software Effective in a Clinical Setting

Posted on 27 May 2014
Dose-tracking software provides effective and easy monitoring of radiation dose exposure in an active academic practice, according to a recent study.

For typically ordered abdominal computed tomography (CT) imaging scans, iterative reconstruction techniques provided approximately 50% radiation dose reduction compared to the US averages reported in the Dose Index Registry.

“A busy practice with diverse CT technology and remote scanner locations encounters challenges in assessing institutional performance in lowering radiation doses,” said researcher Dr. Yasir Andrabi, from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH; Boston, MA, USA). “Software-based dose monitoring simplifies the complex and essential quality and safety assurance with CT scanning irrespective of the scanner location.”

Dr. Andrabi presented his study’s findings at the 2014 American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) annual meeting held in San Diego (CA, USA), May 4–9, 2014.
