A new cesium-iodide detector is designed to offer high efficiency for dose-sensitive pediatric, orthopedic, and general radiology exams.

Carestream Health’s (Rochester, NY, USA) smaller-format 25-cm x 30-cm DRX 2530C cesium iodide detector is designed to provide high efficiency for a range of radiology exams and is a work-in-progress.

“Healthcare providers voiced the need for a smaller detector that would deliver important imaging advantages in pediatric and orthopedic environments, so our engineering team worked to develop the new DRX 2530C detector,” said Diana L. Nole, president, digital medical solutions, Carestream Health. “We are committed to continuously improve our innovative DRX product family with new software and hardware options that help imaging service providers deliver a higher level of patient care.”

The smaller detector is designed to fit into pediatric incubator trays and offer higher DQE (detective quantum efficiency), which can lead to lower dose requirements than computed radiography (CR0 cassettes or gadolinium scintillator detectors. The new DRX 2530C detector is intended to be used with Carestream DRX-Revolution or Carestream DRX-mobile retrofit kits for mobile imaging of pediatric or neonatal patients.

In orthopedic and general radiology imaging, the smaller detector is designed to help in positioning for tabletop exams such as the skull, elbow, knee, and other scans that require a patient to hold the detector or require a smaller field of view. Similar to all DRX detectors, the DRX 2530C is designed for use with the range of Carestream DRX systems to help healthcare providers maximize the use of imaging resources while reducing costs.

Carestream’s DRX software provides image-processing specific to pediatric views that can optimize image quality by choosing default-processing parameters to suppress noise and enhance detail based on patient size. The software expands and incorporates a range of seven patient sizes as specified by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for pediatric exams.
