Digital X-Ray Acquires High-Resolution Images in Real Time

New flat panel digital detector technology incorporates widely adopted imaging technology and sets new standards with its large field-of-view and its ability to acquire high-resolution images in real time.

Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (Palo Alto, CA, USA) X-Ray Products, presented its full line of PaxScan X-ray image detectors for filmless imaging at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) annual meeting in Vienna, Austria from March 4-8, 2010.

"Varian's PaxScan line is the broadest selection of digital X-ray imaging detectors in the industry,” said Steve Kimmel, vice president marketing for Varian X-Ray Products. "Our dynamic X-ray panels consist of six different sizes ranging from 13 cm x 13 cm to 40 cm x 30 cm.” Originally developed to enable high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) cone-beam computed tomography (CT) imaging in Varian's systems for image-guided radiotherapy, the panels have been incorporated into the emerging cone-beam cross-sectional X-ray imaging market such as the new generation super-surgical C-arms. "Our cone beam CT panels enable a high degree of precision by helping doctors visualize the patient in 3D images,” added Mr. Kimmel. "The PaxScan radiographic panel series includes the 4336R, a 43 cm x 36 cm detector, which is our most versatile panel within the line. It is designed to replace standard film cassettes used in existing radiographic and multibucky applications. And with the addition of the optional 4336R enclosure, the panel can also be used in mobile imaging systems, allowing vastly improved access to the patient and capture of images from any patient position.”

"Our detectors present a uniform, undistorted, high-resolution image throughout the field of view,” said Rick Colbeth, research and development engineering manager for Varian's PaxScan Imaging Products. "They offer significant improvement in image quality, superior contrast resolution and the potential of dose reduction,” added Mr. Colbeth. "In addition, the PaxScan interface offers integration consistency throughout the product line, allowing our customers who integrate one of our detectors to easily add additional PaxScan products.”

Varian X-Ray Products is a supplier of X-ray tubes and digital detectors for X-ray imaging in medical, dental, veterinary, scientific, and industrial applications. Varian's X-ray Products manufacturing headquarters is located in Salt Lake City, UT, USA. X-Ray Products is a business unit of Varian Medical Systems. Varian is a world-leading manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiotherapy, radiosurgery, proton therapy, and brachytherapy. The company supplies informatics software for managing comprehensive cancer clinics, radiotherapy centers and medical oncology practices. The company also supplies X-ray imaging products for cargo screening and industrial nondestructive inspection.
