Radiotherapy System Combines Volume Imaging and Treatment Processes for Real-Time Tumor Location

By MedImaging International staff writers
Posted on 13 Aug 2008
A next-generation radiation treatment system is the first of its kind to combine the scanning (X-ray volume imaging [XVI]) and treatment processes in radiotherapy to give a ‘real time' indication of the tumor location during treatment. It enables clinicians to both image and treat patients in the same frame of reference, at the time of treatment. The result is excellent clinical confidence, enabling aggressive treatment of tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

The Elekta (Stockholm, Sweden) Synergy S is the first advanced multi-functional linear accelerator with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). The system directly addresses the two most persistent and significant issues in modern radiation therapy: internal organ motion and errors in patient set-up.

The high level of accuracy and precision with the Elekta Synergy S significantly reduces the number of healthy cells affected by the radiation. The increased accuracy and precision with Elekta Synergy offers the promise that higher doses of radiation can be safely used in treatment, resulting in a shorter treatment process for the patient and clinician.
