Head Support for Radiotherapy Provides Personalized Positioning for Treatment

By MedImaging staff writers
Posted on 22 Jul 2008
A new head support device provides customized head and neck positioning during radiation therapy treatment and diagnostic procedures. Using specially shaped impression foam combined with fabric-coated thermoplastic, the Individual Head Support gives clinicians the power to customize position and support to each patient.

The flexibility of the heated thermoplastic allows easy molding of the impression foam to the individual patient's anatomy, maximizing both patient comfort and reproducibility of positioning. Once cooled, the thermoplastic binds the foam to the molded shape. The fabric-coated thermoplastic will not adhere to hair or skin. The Individual Head Support has been used with traditional thermoplastic masks, as well as with more rigid head frames, to deliver stereotactic radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery.

The Individual Head Support, developed by Civco Medical Solutions (Kalona, IA, USA), provides enhanced fixation, stability, and comfort while minimizing movement of the patient. The device is available with Type-S or Posifix baseplates and either lateral or supine shapes.
