Samsung Extends its Medical Device Business in the European Market

A new medical device brand, called Geo, is showing a company’s commitment to global health through innovative medical devices. The Geo brand includes XGeo for digital radiography, UGeo for ultrasound diagnostic systems, and LabGeo for in vitro diagnostics.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (Suwon, South Korea) launched its medical brand Geo with Samsung Medison (Gangwon, South Korea) at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2013, held in Vienna (Austria) during March 7-11, 2013. Samsung also presented its latest medical equipment and technologies with Samsung Medison.

“Samsung is committed to bringing a new wave of innovation to the radiology market in Europe with our newly established medical equipment brand,” said S. I. Cho, president and head of the health and medical equipment business at Samsung Electronics and CEO of Samsung Medison. “Samsung will continue to develop products that offer fast, accurate diagnosis to both doctors and patients.

Samsung Electronics’ digital radiography (DR) range provides high performance through panel detectors. Even with dose reduction, XGEeo GC80 still provides effective images and diagnosis, which are both critical for the health and safety of patients. The DR’s soft-handling technology allows users to move the device with low physical pressure even without a side-handle.

The upgraded Accuvix A30 ultrasound system features the single crystal transducer optimized for radiology. The single crystal probe (transducer) provides a wide bandwidth, which allows the user to utilize a wider range of frequencies, granting a better resolution and penetration. Furthermore, for the first time, Samsung Electronics presented portable computed tomography (CT) products from NeuroLogica (Danvers, MA, USA). The company was acquired by Samsung Electronics earlier in 2013.

Moreover, Samsung hosted a satellite symposium at the Congress regarding a new tool for detecting and diagnosing breast cancer, the ultrasound ElastoScan. Speakers discussed the technology within ElastoScan and its diagnostic capability to help detect breast cancer at an early stage and support surgery procedure.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is a global leader in technology. Samsung Medison is a leading global medical devices company. Founded in 1985, the company markets innovative medical devices including diagnostic ultrasound, digital X-ray, and blood analyzers, in 110 countries worldwide. The company has attracted global attention in the medical field with its R&D capabilities and advanced technologies. In 2011, Samsung Medison became an affiliate company of Samsung Electronics, integrating information technology (IT), image processing, semiconductor and communication technologies into medical devices.
