Software Helps Orthopedic Surgeons View EHR Images

New image interoperability and surgical planning software is helping a US orthopedic practice to view images directly from the electronic health record (EHR).

Merge Healthcare (Chicago, IL, USA), a global corporation that develops health information technology (IT) interoperability solutions, reported that Resurgens Orthopaedics (Atlanta, GA, USA), one of the United States' largest orthopedic practices, has selected Merge iConnect interoperability and surgical planning software from Merge for enterprise-wide implementation across 20 offices and six surgery centers. The software will allow Resurgens' physicians to view images directly within their EHR solution.

"Our busy practice needed a comprehensive image management solution," explained Steven B. Wertheim, MD, Resurgens copresident. "By combining Merge's powerful image management backbone, the specialty viewing applications needed in orthopedics, and the ability to integrate into our EHR, we anticipate a significant time savings for our surgeons, referring physicians and clinicians throughout the care process."

Merge iConnect is an integrated software suite that facilitates the sharing of diagnostic content and results across the continuum of care. Resurgens will add iConnect Access for zero-client [ultrathin client] viewing to provide excellent service to referring physicians, iConnect Share for automated image transfer from referral facilities without requiring CDs, and iConnect VNA (vendor-neutral archive) to store and move images from multiple data sources. Moreover, Resurgens will add Merge's orthopedic surgical planning software to their existing Merge OrthoPACS solution.

"In addition to the immediate benefits to patient care," added Bradley Dick, Resurgens CIO, "the Merge iConnect platform will help position our practice for the complex imaging requirements coming at us with regard to Meaningful Use and Accountable Care payment models."
