Coronary artery calcification (CAC) impacts 20 million Americans each year, with over half of incidental findings going unreported. Traditionally, coronary artery calcium scans were only available to symptomatic patients through specialized CT scans, missing the opportunity for early detection. Now, a new FDA-cleared technology provides a CAC score, helping to identify heart disease risk from any ungated, non-contrast chest CT scan.

Riverain Technologies (Miamisburg, OH, USA) offers the ClearRead CT CAC system, which accurately detects, quantifies, and reports the Agatston score. This system is compatible with ungated, non-contrast standard, and low-dose chest CT exams, making it an ideal addition to lung cancer screening programs. It also benefits patients undergoing CT scans for other conditions. Riverain’s FDA-cleared ClearRead software employs advanced machine learning and AI technologies to deliver consistent imaging results across various devices and patient groups.

The ClearRead solutions, incorporating Clear Visual Intelligence, utilize unique suppression technology to eliminate interfering structures, such as bones and vessels, and machine noise that can distort accurate diagnoses. This technology provides a clear, unobstructed view, allowing radiologists to focus on actionable data, improving diagnostic accuracy and enabling earlier intervention. By adding CAC scoring, the ClearRead CT suite enhances its existing nodule detection capabilities.

"With more than 4 million imaging exams now processed annually using ClearRead solutions, there is a huge opportunity to improve the health of patients by maximizing the findings in each scan," said Steve Worrell, CEO of Riverain Technologies. "ClearRead CT CAC enables healthcare providers to use ungated chest CT for early intervention and assessment of cardiac risk."
