New Collaboration Agreement for the Production of Ultra High-Field 7.0-T MRI Systems

GE Healthcare (Chalfont St. Giles, UK) and Tesla Engineering (Pulborough; England) have announced that they will collaborate to produce 7.0-T human whole-body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners.

Tesla Engineering, a cryogenics technology company, designs and manufactures resistive and superconducting electromagnets, and will build the 7.0-T magnets in a new factory under construction in Storrington (UK). The company plans to ship the first 7.0-T unit to GE Healthcare in late 2015.

Researchers use the ultra-high-field MRI scanners for scientific and medical research, especially for brain imaging. The research is intended to contribute to earlier detection, better diagnosis, and improved effectiveness for many medical disorders and diseases.

Richard Hausmann, president and CEO of GE Healthcare, said, “This agreement will enable GE to deepen and broaden our collaborations with leading MRI academics and visionaries, sharing our collective expertise and missions in technology, science and medicine. The GE 7.0-T community in the US, Europe and Asia has already demonstrated breakthrough observations and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury and cognitive physiology. Together, we will continue to push the frontiers of MRI for neuroscience and other applications.”
