Wide Bore MR System Addresses Need for Larger Systems with High-Quality Imaging

As the need for wider MR systems increases, the industry has struggled over technology hurdles preventing larger systems from providing advanced image quality. Addressing this issue, a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system has been developed with a wider bore that provides the most advanced image quality, in fewer scans.

GE Healthcare (Chalfont St. Giles, UK) recently introduced the Optima MR450w MR system, designed to serve the needs of obese and claustrophobic patients requiring larger imaging systems. The technology is clinically optimized for specific anatomies, including state-of-the-art breast imaging capabilities. The large field of view scans more anatomy and the wide bore provides enhanced patient comfort.

"GE has overcome the traditional limitations that sacrificed image quality for size of scan,” remarked A. Joseph Borelli, Jr., M.D., president and medical director at Belfair Medical Clinic (Bluffton, SC, USA). "As radiologists, administrators, and technologists continue to demand productivity without compromise to image quality, GE Healthcare is uniquely positioned to offer applications and capabilities aimed to drive efficiency, improve usability, and reinforce growth.”

"Our customers needed a wider system to enable them to meet the needs of obese and claustrophobic patients,” said Jim Davis, general manager of MR, GE Healthcare. "Without sacrifice to image quality, our new MR system provides productivity and broader patient access to the most advanced diagnostic tools.”

Built on a fully redesigned MR platform, the Optima MR450w offers applications and capabilities that improve usability as well as providing the following features: advanced anatomy-optimized capabilities for imaging breast, spine, and cardiovascular regions; redesigned platform that accelerates image quality--an exclusive optical radiofrequency (RF) system and a new 145-cm long magnet offer uniform tissue contrast and optimized MR signal for clear images; and patient-centered optimization-- exclusive removable table minimizes time between scans while productivity enhancements dramatically reduce time of MR studies.
