A manufacturing facility built in Bayan Lepas (Penang, Malaysia) by Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation (Otawara, Japan) will produce diagnostic imaging systems.

The new 8,582-m2 facility cost JPY 1.68 billion (about USD 14 million) to build. The factory will produce 400 ultrasound devices per month for the Southeast Asian, Middle East, European, and US markets. Toshiba has also set up new diagnostic imaging plants in China and Brazil.

The facility is expected to employ 200 workers when it is fully operational in the second half of 2015. The plant currently produces Toshiba's Aplio A300, Aplio A400 and Aplio A500 ultrasound machines used during pregnancy and for monitoring vascular health.

The new facility will eventually produce different medical diagnostic imaging systems, such as Computed Tomography (CT), X-ray, ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine systems, and information systems.

Satoshi Tsunakawa, president and CEO of Toshiba Medical Systems, said, "We want to capture growing demand in emerging markets and expand our health care business to 10% of group revenue, up from the current 6%."

Malaysia is eager to attract investments by healthcare manufacturing companies, and create 181,000 healthcare jobs by 2020.
