Customized Imaging Environments Designed to Relax, Comfort Patients

Posted on 15 Nov 2012
Scalable healthcare settings have been designed, ranging from colorful wall and equipment coverings to tranquil sounds and aromatherapy, which will enable healthcare facilities to transform the patient experience to a more comfortable environment.

Siemens Healthcare’s (Erlangen, Germany) ImageScapes customized thematic healthcare environments were developed to comfort and relax patients of all ages and positively impact the patient experience. ImageScapes customized healthcare environments include colorful, maintenance-free wraps of imaging equipment and walls; artistically designed, three-dimensional (3D) sculpted coverings that transfigure the appearance of an imaging system; and custom décor for exam rooms and waiting areas. To help invigorate each of the senses and immerse patients in the desired environment, ImageScapes also includes aromatherapy and tranquil sounds.

Customized and scalable to meet healthcare providers’ needs and finances, ImageScapes healthcare environments not only help facilities potentially improve patient approval and avoid cancellations, but they also may increase staff satisfaction by providing a more appealing work environment. The calming fragrances, lights, and music offered by ImageScapes in a women’s health department can mimic the lush feel of a spa; a sand castle façade positioned over a computed tomography (CT) system, combined with the sounds of seagulls and moving water and the subtle aroma of coconut oil, can carry adult patient populations to the beach; and colorful circus images that cover an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system and the surrounding walls can help ease stress and nervousness for pediatric patients and their parents.

“How patients experience care will be viewed more critically than ever before, since HCAHPS [Hospital Consensus Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems] scores directly impact a facility’s level of reimbursement,” explained Gerhard Schmiedel, vice president of X-ray products at Siemens Healthcare. “The unique, immersive settings provided by ImageScapes help to create a more soothing patient treatment environment that also helps healthcare providers distinguish themselves from their market competitors.”
