Evaluating the Benefits of Integrating Angiographic Imaging Capabilities in a Hybrid Operating Suite

Many hospitals world-wide are considering investing in hybrid operating suites that integrate angiographic imaging with surgical techniques. Institutions that could benefit most from a hybrid suite include university hospitals, large hospitals, and those specialized in vascular surgery. Such institutions are already equipped with the infrastructure needed for complex vascular surgical procedures, including specialized Operating Rooms (OR) with intensive care facilities, and appropriately trained nursing staff. Hybrid operating rooms are also being considered for urology and visceral surgery institutions.

One example is Heidelberg University Hospital (Heidelberg, Germany) which invested in a hybrid suite in 2010, and as a result, in 2014, 70% –80% of vascular diseases in the hospital were treated by new endovascular methods using advanced imaging techniques. The number of procedures also increased by 10%, as well as response times during complications, while radiation dose and contrast agent quantities were reduced.

According to vascular surgeon Prof. Boeckler, “We enjoy close cooperation between vascular surgery, interventional radiology, angiology, and heart surgery here in Heidelberg. We discuss indications of complex pathologies and even operate together. But there is still room to bring down old, traditional barriers further.”
