iPad App Designed for Teleradiology Applications

Posted on 30 Nov 2011
A mobile iPad app (application) was developed to rapidly, easily, and securely transfer the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images from hospitals and imaging centers to on-call and other radiologists and referring physicians with an iPad. The mobile app’s simple interface and efficient feature set make it a suitable tool for teleradiology and reviewing images with colleagues, referring physicians, and patients in remote locations.

aycan Medical Systems (Wuerzburg, Germany) will present its latest vendor-neutral archiving, viewing, printing, and integration solutions and services devised to improve workflow efficiency and decrease costs, at this year’s Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) scientific assembly and annual meeting, held November 27- December 2, 2011, in Chicago (IL, USA).

Working with aycan workstation OsiriX Pro, this vendor-neutral cost-efficient solution improves workflow with key features such as lossless JPEG 2000 compression, and automatic 256-bit AES (advanced Encryption Standard) encryption. Another feature, developed in partnership with EIZO (Ishikawa, Japan), allows users to connect the iPad (developed by Apple, Inc., Cupertino, CA, USA) to larger medical monitors for higher resolution viewing, yet still employ the easy-to-use iPad to drive the app. The app has European CE Marking; US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance is pending.

The aycan store picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is a vendor-neutral, scalable, high-performance DICOM archiving and distribution system. The aycan store can now be combined with aycan partner product, medQ Q/ris 3000 customizable enterprise software, to form a fully integrated digital imaging and patient management system. From simple to complicated workflows in imaging centers, hospitals, and teleradiology service companies, aycan store can improve the workflow in any environment.

Several features/plug-ins have been added to the aycan workstation OsiriX Pro that significantly expands its functionality. Featured among them is FusionSync, partner company Chimaera’s (Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA) software tool for multimodal image fusion. Seamlessly integrated in OsiriX Pro, FusionSync’s fast, effective, and automatic-rigid image fusion allows users to easily view multimodal and follow-up series together for more efficient diagnoses. OsiriX Pro is a 64-bit fast, Mac-based, vendor-neutral, highly functional, sophisticated image-processing tool and DICOM PACS workstation for traditional, multislice and other image reading. Based on the open source project OsiriX, aycan’s version is turnkey with FDA 510 (k) clearance, CE Marking, and full integration-service and customer support.

aycan will also present aycan X-ray-print, a DICOM paper-print solution that now features a wider array of output systems and more flexible and economical pricing models. aycan X-ray-print is an inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and easy way to communicate with referring physicians and patients--customers can save 90% on film costs.
