Higher Level Collaboration in PACS Provides Enhanced Patient Care

A new picture archiving and communication system (PACS) utilizes the latest developments in information technology (IT). It allows for more effective collaboration with the goal of better patient outcomes.

IntelliSpace informatics solutions are a range of clinical informatics and patient care technologies that simplify the delivery of detailed, actionable patient information to clinicians. Philips Healthcare (Best, The Netherlands) announced the introduction of IntelliSpace PACS 4.4, the newest release in the progression of its iSite PACS. Built on Philips’ successful iSite PACS, IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 increases user experience through open access to images and information, enhanced enterprise workflow, new clinical applications, and sophisticated tools for proactive service and support. It includes features specifically geared to meet the needs of hospitals’ rapidly evolving technologic environments, including an interoperable, open application programming interface (API) that allows for customization and interfacing with IntelliSpace PACS 4.4-specific data with a hospital’s own advanced networking tools. Designed to help improve productivity and interdepartmental communication, and to facilitate the American College of Radiology (ACR; Reston, VA, USA)-mandated peer review process, the system’s Advanced Workflow Layer application provides enhanced clinical workflow features and value-added functionality.

IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 also offers the convenience and workflow advantages of reading mammography studies on PACS workstations with IntelliSpace PACS Mammography 4.4. It combines the review speed and quality of a mammography workstation with the efficiency of PACS integrated workflow.

IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 incorporates several other new features: IntelliSpace PACS Federation allows users to view other IntelliSpace PACS archives, or gain access to a disparate PACS, to present reports and images to the clinician with a view of a patient’s imaging history; sophisticated visualization that enhances productivity while increasing clinical confidence, as well as optional applications that provide support for a range of medical specialties and modalities; expanded suite of clinical applications--IntelliSpace advanced clinical applications with Philips IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 feature a full set of optional multimodality applications to help improve clinical workflow, improve communication, and increase diagnostic confidence for radiologists and clinicians. Cardiology, neurology, oncology, musculoskeletal, gastroenterology, and digestive diseases are among the clinical application areas supported.

“Clinical informatics is crucial for physicians and other healthcare personnel who deal with large volumes of patients or face complicated clinical decisions,” said Helen Routh, vice president and general manager, Philips enterprise imaging informatics, for Philips Healthcare. “The new IntelliSpace PACS 4.4 helps to organize patient medical imaging information, improve productivity, and simplify workflow by providing a wealth of resources for clinicians.”
