World's First Whole-Body Ultra-High Field MRI Officially Comes To Market

Posted on 07 May 2024

The world's first whole-body ultra-high field (UHF) MRI has officially come to market, marking a remarkable advancement in diagnostic radiology.

United Imaging (Shanghai, China) has secured clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its uMR Jupiter 5T MRI system, a pioneering whole-body MRI system that surpasses traditional barriers in ultra-high-field (UHF) imaging. The uMR Jupiter 5T is the first UHF system approved for whole-body applications and is uniquely equipped with an 8-channel whole-body multi-transmit system, a first for any MRI system regardless of field strength. This advancement in MRI technology enables clinicians to capture images of anatomical structures with extraordinary clarity and detail. Utilizing UHF magnet strength, the uMR Jupiter 5T delivers superior resolution and an unmatched signal-to-noise ratio, significantly enhancing diagnostic precision.

The versatile design of the uMR Jupiter 5T expands imaging capabilities to areas that were previously difficult to image at UHF, such as the heart, abdomen, and pelvis. This cutting-edge technology provides radiologists with the tools to detect and diagnose a broad spectrum of conditions more accurately and confidently across various exams. The uMR Jupiter 5T also excels in overcoming two major hurdles associated with ultra-high-field MRI: ensuring image uniformity and maintaining radiofrequency safety. Through innovative design and meticulous engineering, the uMR Jupiter 5T consistently delivers high-quality images and upholds stringent safety standards for patients.

"For decades, whole body applications above 3T have been elusive, and this system was targeted to open those doors. uMR Jupiter breaks new ground and defines a new technical category of systems, said Dr. Al Zhang, Ph.D, Chairman & Co-CEO of United Imaging.

“Because it is aimed first and foremost at bringing ultra-high-field into greater clinical use, we believe it will have an exciting impact across our industry, and for clinical patients across the globe who have never had access to ultra-high-field in the past," added Jeffrey M. Bundy, Ph.D., President & Chief Commercial Officer of United Imaging in North America.
