A new microscope unites high-resolution optics, an increased depth of field, and superior illumination to display surgical sites in full, crisp focus.

The Leica Microsystems (Wetzlar, Germany) Provido uses exclusive Fusion Optics technology to enhance depth of field with high resolution. Combined with a powerful 300 W xenon lamp and small angle illumination (SAI), the system provides a bright, fully-focused view deep into narrow cavities. In addition, the backup illumination, powered by a 75 W light emitting diode (LED) lamp or 300 W xenon arc lamps that automatically activates if needed, ensure the best possible view of the surgical field.

To support efficient set-up at the beginning of a procedure, the microscope stand is designed to be extremely lightweight and versatile, allowing for fast, almost effortless positioning. Electromagnetic brakes and an adaptive balancing system enable Provido to be positioned at the required angle with the lightest touch, with micro-adjustment correction using a joystick control. Once the optics carrier is correctly positioned, the sturdy, full-metal construction of the floor stand assures it remains vibration-free and immobile.

The surgical view can be shared with the entire OR team via the fully integrated high definition (HD) C100 imaging and recording system, which allows users to start recording of surgical video footage or still images at the touch of a button. The recording can be easily shared by saving the images or videos to a USB drive, or directly to the hospital network via cable for storage in the electronic medical record (EMR). In addition, the stand-mounted HD touch screen monitor (24” or 27”) can be flexibly positioned for convenient viewing.

“Leica has set itself the goal of always pushing the limits of what was possible before to help surgeons all over the world master demanding and sometimes life-changing procedures,” said Markus Lusser, President of Leica Microsystems. “With Provido, we have again succeeded in setting a new standard for visualization quality of an entire segment. Now, ENT and spine surgeons can benefit from a highly detailed surgical view that was previously only available in the field of neurosurgery.”
