The remote Bayalpata Hospital in the mountains of Western Nepal has set up a system that will allow their physicians to digitize and send X-ray images to physicians in Grande hospital in Kathmandu for viewing and remote consultation.

The system was set with the help of a grant from the Rotary Foundation and included the installation of a Vita Computed CR imaging system from Carestream (Rochester, NY, USA) and an Imaging software suite with software tools, workflow aids, and a mini-PACS module for improved image management and remote consultations.

X-ray images acquired at Bayalpata Hospital (Sanfebagar, Nepal) are digitized, and are then available for viewing anywhere in the hospital. The images can be exported from the Vita imaging system, and sent to specialist clinics, such as the Grande Hospital (Kathmandu, Nepal) for reading and remote consultations by physicians and orthopaedic specialists. This allows patients at Bayalpata Hospital to receive expert opinions and care, not normally accessible in such a remote location.
