A new software suite with flexible multimodal image viewing and image contouring has been presented at the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) forum in April 2015, in Barcelona (Spain).

The software solution is intended to assist radiation oncologists to determine the optimal patient-specific radiation therapy by creating contours of tumors and surrounding healthy tissue, from Computed Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography CT (PET-CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images.

The syngo.via RT Image Suite, developed by Siemens Healthcare (Erlangen, Germany/), can help prevent damage to healthy tissue and organs during treatment with radiation therapy. The system can display up to eight fused image series on four image panels simultaneously, and provides a comprehensive overview to help clinicians find the most suitable treatment.

The software can be used to diagnose prostate cancer using Dual Energy CT images, a variety of PET tracers, and various MRI image contrasts, and to visualize tumors in the liver or lungs. The software saves time by providing automatic, parallel contouring of marked areas in a number of image series. This helps clinicians prepare precise contours of the tumor tissue and neighboring organs, even for moving 4-D CT datasets of the lungs. The system also supports rapid re-contouring for treatment adaptation. Clinical images from the software can be used in treatment planning systems for dosimetric planning.
